This session offers an overview of the Executive Orders and anti-discrimination laws most relevant to the nonprofit sector. You'll gain practical tools to assess legal and operational risks, along with actionable strategies to help your leadership and board respond. Come away with key questions to spark informed, future-focused discussions as you safeguard your mission and chart a path forward.

Session will provide:

  • an overview of some of the executive orders that impact nonprofits
  • information/tools to give leaders a framework for assessing their risk
  • tips for managing federal contract issues
  • an overview of anti-discrimination laws
  • tips for assessing organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and policies
     

About the Presenters

Charla Stevens, JD, Charla Stevens Consulting 

Charla B. Stevens practiced law in New Hampshire and Massachusetts  for more than 37 years.  She spent the last 21 years at McLane Middleton, a regional law firm with more than 100 lawyers, where she chaired the employment law practice group and also represented schools and health care practices.

Since retiring from McLane Middleton at the end of 2021, Stevens has established a consulting practice where she continues to offer services to businesses including workplace training, independent investigations, strategic human resources consulting, and mediation and conflict resolution.

Jason Cole, JD, CPA, Bernstein Shur

As a JD and CPA who also holds an MBA, Jason offers a unique multidisciplinary perspective on complex transactions, business structuring, and regulatory compliance for both for-profit and non-profit organizations. 

Before joining Bernstein Shur, Jason served as General Counsel for one of New Hampshire’s largest health systems, where he navigated high-stakes regulatory and transactional matters and led the system through the largest hospital merger in the state’s history. In this role, he worked closely with senior leadership, translating legal complexity into actionable strategies and driving organizational change. His experience managing crises—including regulatory scrutiny, whistleblower suits, and media-sensitive matters—has made him a trusted advisor in moments of uncertainty.
