Tips for Finding Board Members

We are often asked by our nonprofit members where to find the right people to fill board positions. We have a few thoughts on where you can start, but first, if you are looking for board service opportunities or you are a nonprofit looking for board candidates, mark your calendar for Thursday, June 20. We are hosting Board Bound: Solstice Networking Reception at the NH Audubon/McLane Center in Concord from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. It's an informal reception to network  while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and drinks at NH Audubon’s beautiful McLane Center.

Now, back to our tips for recruiting board members in New Hampshire. Here are our go-to tips for recruiting board candidates.

  • Post your board opportunity in the New Hampshire Nonprofits LinkedIn group.
  • Post your board opportunity on Volunteer NH.
  • If you post about board opportunities on social media, tag the NH Center for Nonprofits. Tagging us will increase your reach.
  • Seek referrals from business or community leaders familiar with your work.
  • Many board members serve on multiple nonprofit boards in their lifetime. Ask your community partners if they have any former board members with the skills you need, and who may be looking for a new board opportunity.
  • Let your local Chamber of Commerce, Young Professionals Group, Leadership program, and Leadership NH know about your opportunity.
  • Consider people who have benefited from your programs, currently volunteer in other capacities, or are representative of the community that you serve.
