Strength in Community: Advocating for Nonprofits in Uncertain Times, a note from Kathleen Reardon
We believe in the power of community. That sentiment is more than a core value – it’s an active strategy we are leaning into as we navigate through these uncertain times. Our strength as a sector lies in our ability to work together, as advocates for the people and communities we serve.
Last week, I attended several hearings at the State House where nonprofits showed up in full force, sharing stories about their critical missions and the potential harm proposed legislation, such as HB625, would have on our communities.
On the national level, impact stories from nonprofits were essential to the lawsuit filed by the National Council of Nonprofits which put a temporary halt on the federal funding freeze.
We need to keep telling these stories. According to a study by the Lilly School of Philanthropy, just 5% of Americans believe they or anyone in their immediate family received services from a charitable organization or nonprofit in the past year. Now is the time for us to double down on our efforts to make sure people understand the profound impact nonprofits have on their lives.
I encourage you to let us know if you are experiencing issues with access to federal funding or other impacts from the Executive Orders that have been issued. You can share your stories by emailing info@nhnonprofits.org.
There are still battles ahead for the nonprofits sector on both local and national levels. At the Center, we will continue to do our part: gathering and sharing information, providing resources, and standing up for our sector.
I am grateful to be part of the nonprofit community and recognize all that we contribute to our state’s vitality. Your good work matters, and we'll fight to ensure that you can continue making a difference.
