NH Center for Nonprofits’ Policy Caucus Explores New Political Landscape
Over 100 nonprofit leaders gathered on December 5 to explore the new political landscape following the 2024 elections. Jessica Mendiata, policy staffer from the National Council on Nonprofits, discussed the incoming 119th Congress, noting the new balance of power in both the US Senate at 53 R - 47 D with new Majority Leader Thune (R-SD) and the US House at 220 R - 215 D. Mendieta also shared the opportunities for the nonprofit sector to secure a non-itemizer deduction as tax proposals are considered in Congress. She warned that the sector will likely be called to advocate against the repeal of the Johnson Amendment as well.
The panel of state experts included Anna Brown from Citizens Count and the Rudman Center, Mike Skelton from the Business and Industry Association and Neil Levesque from Saint Anselm’s Institute of Politics. They expressed enthusiasm about opportunities to improve government contracting practices, but noted that the decreasing revenues and the end of federal pandemic relief dollars paint a stark budget picture for nonprofits seeking increases to important social service line items.
