Service Dog Trainer
About the Job
Operation Delta Dog is seeking a part-time experienced positive reinforcement dog trainer to join our amazing team. The job entails working with individual dogs at our facility and in public, teaching group training classes to our veteran clients, and working closely with the other members of the training team. We are seeking a patient, open-minded individual who thrives best working in a collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities May Include:
-Training dogs to perform a variety of tasks, using positive reinforcement methods only and following LIMA principles.
-Working with our veterans in a group class setting as well as occasionally one-on-one to help them train their service dogs.
-Being an integral part of the training team, helping to evaluate dogs for service dog work, and taking dogs in training to different public speaking events.
-Helping with bringing dogs to veterinary appointments, home visits, or work site visits.
-Providing mental and physical stimulation for the dogs undergoing their initial training in our kennel.
-Assisting with light cleaning tasks when extra help is needed (i.e. laundry, vacuuming).
Requirements:
-An individual with 2 or more years of hands-on training experience is highly preferred.
-The completion of a professional dog training course through Karen Pryor Academy, IAABC, Victoria Stillwell Academy, etc.
-If no formal training class has been taken, 3-5 of work as an apprentice under an experienced positive reinforcement dog trainer.
-CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA or equivalent
-Experience working with dogs in a kennel or shelter environment is preferred.
-Good communication skills, the ability to work well in a group but also be able to thrive when working independently. Flexibility is a must.
