Nonprofit seasonal retreat center seeking hands-on full-time, seasonal Island Engineer

Star Island, a $4.6 million budget non-profit organization, with corporate offices in Portsmouth, NH, is looking to add a full-time, seasonal (~mid-April to ~mid- to late-October) Island Engineer to their organization. 

Reporting to the Island Manager, the Island Engineer is responsible for ensuring effective operation and maintenance of island infrastructure, equipment, and systems including: diesel/solar power generation and distribution, refrigeration, commercial kitchen, commercial laundry, propane, hot water generation, plumbing, cranes, vehicles, small engines, heavy equipment, fire/safety, and other island equipment. The Island Engineer position is a seasonal, full-time, exempt position. The Island Engineer supervises the Assistant Island Engineer/Administrator, and in collaboration with the Assistant Island Engineer/Administrator, the Maintenance/Mechanical Crew.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure infrastructure/systems are regularly monitored: fuel, power, refrigeration, and safety. 
  • Ensure understanding of and compliance with State of NH air resources permit to operate, waste management regulations, safe workplace standards, and other state/federal statutes and regulations.
  • Ensure understanding and compliance with organizational policies and procedures including purchasing and record-keeping. 
  • Ensure records are kept for all maintenance activities.
  • Establish and oversee preventive maintenance schedules for island equipment and systems.
  • Ensure effective and trackable response system for work orders/repair requests, reported issues, and emergencies.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of seasonal island start-up and shutdown including system/infrastructure set-up, winterization, and seasonal transitions.
  • Ensure staffing plan for 24-hour coverage and response.
  • Establish and maintain culture of workplace safety.
  • Ensure that the facilities department has tools and training necessary to effectively complete expected duties. 
  • Effectively utilize and manage contractors and skilled volunteers within the Island Engineer’s areas of responsibility; maintain a network of experts to assist staff with various projects.
  • Participate in regular facilities team meetings, tasks, and projects.
  • Additional miscellaneous duties and responsibilities consistent with those listed above.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

  • Work experience or degree in engineering, facilities/infrastructure maintenance, energy efficiency, or related disciplines. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems and technical issues.
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated supervisory ability.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in group settings.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects, tasks, and requests.
  • Safe, cooperative, respectful individual who will thrive in the close working and living quarters of Star Island’s remote setting.
  • Overnight stay/residency on Island.
