The Historical Society of Cheshire County is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and communicating the history of Cheshire County in the beautiful Monadnock region.  The Society offers over 100 educational programs per year.

Description

The Executive Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Historical Society. The Executive Director interprets and applies the policies adopted by the Board of Trustees. With support from staff the Executive Director is responsible for financial management, educational interpretation, development, collections, facilities, and public relations.

This is a full-time position. Competitive compensation will include health insurance allowance and retirement savings plan eligibility.

This position requires relevant education and administrative experience in a non-profit setting. Excellent leadership skills as well as excellent written, verbal communication, and organizational skills are required.  The Executive Director should be energetic and creative, results oriented, work well in a team environment, and be self-directed.

 

 The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Historical Society of Cheshire County.

  • Provide strong leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the organization.
  • Plan and direct all Society activities and operations.
  • Lead and manage staff.
  • Represent the Society in the community.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the organization.
  • Lead the implementation of policies, procedures, and strategic plan as developed by the staff and Board of Trustees.
  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and manage Society staff.
  • Cultivate a positive working environment and provide leadership for staff to implement the mission of the organization.
  • Be responsible for the administration of personnel policies.
  • Represent the Society in the community by serving as spokesperson and advocate working to enhance the organization’s public image.
  • Develop annual budgets with the Finance Committee.
  • Manage and administer funds, approve expenses, and work to ensure financial stability.
  • Steward relationships with major benefactors.
  • Be responsible for the management and conservation of the Society’s extensive historical collection.
  • Oversee development, educational programs, and marketing activities.
  • Overseas management and maintenance of the Society’s physical plant.
  • Ensure that all committees operate effectively, and serve ex-officio on all committees of the Society.
  • Participate in museum and history organizations.
  • Adhere to federal and state nonprofit rules and regulations and the Society’s governing documents.
  • Complete other responsibilities assigned by the Board of Trustees.

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • At least six years of relevant management experience
    • Working with a nonprofit board
    • Fundraising and development
    • Financial management
    • Community and public relations

 

Experience 

The ideal candidate will possess skill, passion, creativity, and an appreciation for history, the arts, educational programming, and community partnerships. A demonstrable commitment to the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion is necessary.
