POSITION:  Director of Nursing

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  President/CEO

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The Director of Nursing is a key member of the Leadership Team and plays a major role in the culture of caring and commitment throughout the organization. They serve as a clinical leader, guide all aspects of resident care, foster teamwork amongst staff, and promote both clinical and educational development.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Nursing Practice

  • Serves as infection prevention nurse (or trains and supervises designee) and develops a culture of prevention
    • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of patient care team members
    • Regularly assesses the effectiveness of delivery models and develops new delivery models as indicated
    • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to assist with admission, discharge planning, and census management
    • Serves as primary clinical liaison with referring hospitals, Medicaid, and community nursing agencies or area agencies; designates, organizes, and supervises nursing staff tasked with admission, discharge, and other clinical partner follow-up tasks
      • Ensures that care is provided and documented according to established standards
      • Ensures that staffing patterns are sufficient to meet standards of care
      • Ensures availability and functionality of necessary nursing supplies and equipment
      • Maintains knowledge of current residents’ medical needs for program oversight, accurate on-call coverage, and medical interventions or support as needed
      • Communicates significant changes of status to families
      • Maintains open communication with families for DNR/POLST
      • Serves as a supervisor and subject matter expert in electronic systems, including Point Click Care

 

Organizational Leadership

  • Serves as a member of the Leadership Team and participates in other management meetings as requested
  • Provides administrative support and oversight to the Nurse Managers, Respiratory Therapists, Nurses, and Dietitian
  • Ensures children’s nutritional needs are met, coordinating with the Dietitian and Medical Director
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Trustees as requested
  • Represents the organization to health care constituents within the community
  • Serves on community-based boards, advisory groups, and task forces as appropriate

People Operations Management

  • Builds a culture of collaboration
  • Participates in workforce planning and employment decisions
  • Uses progressive discipline to mitigate challenging workplace behavior
  • Promotes positive work environments that maintain an environment that values diversity
  • Addresses sexual harassment, workplace violence, verbal, and physical abuse immediately and in accordance with established policies
  • Coaches staff and provides ongoing feedback on performance and regular written performance reviews in accordance with established policies
  • Holds regular staff meetings and encourages an environment conducive to opinion sharing, exploration of ideas, and achievement of outcomes 

Safety and Risk Management

  • Supports a Just Culture (non-punitive) reporting environment, including positive reinforcement systems for identifying unsafe practices
  • Monitors clinical activities to identify both expected and unexpected risks
  • Works in a manner to prevent and/or minimize unsafe conditions and hazards

Interdisciplinary Relationships

  • Collaborates with physicians and other disciplines (e.g. dental, pharmacy, specialists, others) to develop patient care protocols, policies, and procedures
  • Addresses and models appropriate communication and conflict resolution
  • Creates opportunities for interdisciplinary professional dialogue
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and promote the coordination of care across disciplines
  • Fosters teamwork and strong communication between the program areas and across shifts

Financial Management

  • Works with President/CEO to develop and manage an annual nursing operating budget and participates in capital expenditure planning
  • Interprets financial statements and manages department financial resources
  • Oversees ordering of medical supplies and works closely with vendors to assure timely cost-effective and appropriate product delivery
  • Uses technology to support improvement of clinical and financial performance
  • Collaborates with Director of Quality on Training, Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and other key processes
