Emerson School for Preschoolers

The Ralph Waldo Emerson School for Preschoolers is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization founded in 1966.  We offer morning and afternoon programs for three, four and five-year-old children. Emerson School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Emerson's classrooms and woodland playground create a beautiful space that is rich in potential. Our curriculum is shared and created by both teachers and children working together.

We believe that children learn best through what they do best - through their play. Our teachers closely observe children's play and then offer further opportunities for children to reflect on and revisit their experiences.

Emerson School's uniqueness results from relationships between families, teachers, and a parent volunteer Board of Directors. These partnerships have been the essence of Emerson for more than 50 years and the key to our continued success.

Emerson School has been nationally accredited since 1992 by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Programs accredited by NAEYC voluntarily exceed minimum licensing standards set by the state to provide the most beneficial practices for children.  Schools undergo a comprehensive process of internal self-study, and invite external professional review to verify compliance with the NAEYC's criteria for high quality early childhood programs.
The required criteria Emerson must meet for accreditation includes providing activities appropriate for the age and interests of preschool children, maintaining a high ratio of staff to children, establishing high quality teacher-child interactions, meeting stringent safety standards, and having opportunities for parent involvement. The accreditation process includes an on-site study of the program and a review by a three member national commission.  Emerson was most recently reviewed through this process in 2013.
