Friends of Tuckerman Ravine

Mission

Our mission is to preserve and protect the unique alpine and sub-alpine eastern slopes of Mount Washington, NH with special focus on Tuckerman Ravine, Huntington Ravine and the Gulf of Slides areas. We work in close partnership with the US Forest Service and the Mount Washington Avalanche Center to sustain the traditional recreational uses of this distinctive and historically significant area

Current Activities and Focus

  • Provide financial support for trail and backcountry programs within the Cutler River Drainage area
  • Provide volunteer support for USFS (United States Forest Service) backcountry patrol program supporting visitor information and education activities
  • Assist in fundraising campaigns for capital projects identified by the USFS
  • Support the membership & fundraising efforts of collaborating groups including AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) & MWVSP (Mount Washington Volunteer Ski Patrol)
  • Financial support for the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, including general program supplies, first aid, search & rescue supplies and program infrastructure

Recent Projects

  • Hermit Lake deck reconstruction - raised money, donated materials and provided volunteer help with the reconstruction of the historically significant deck structure at Hermit Lake – a revered meeting spot for spring skiers & riders
  • Avalanche advisory kiosks  - constructed a set of avalanche information kiosks at Hermit Lake and Harvard Cabin to provide updates on current snow conditions & avalanche assessment
  • Ravine – sponsored the creation of a documentary film capturing Tuckerman Ravine’s history, majestic beauty and related stories & adventures
  • Trail maintenance - sponsored several events to cleanup and maintain the conditions of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail, the John Sherburne Ski Trail and the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail
  • Annual Tuckerman Inferno Race – host for one of the MOST CHALLENGING ADVENTURE RACES IN THE COUNTRY and an important fundraising effort to support our cause
