Deputy Director of Development

The Music Hall

The Music Hall is a community-supported nonprofit performing arts center featuring entertainment from around the corner to around the world. It was recently named Editors’ Choice “Best All-Around Entertainment” by Yankee Magazine. With two theaters in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire – one, the 1878 Victorian-era Historic Theater, the other the modern and intimate Music Hall Loft – it is an active and vital arts center, dedicated to the cultural life of the Seacoast community.

The Music Hall, a leading performing arts center with two venues in downtown Portsmouth, NH, seeks a senior fundraising professional to serve as Deputy Director of Development. Reporting to the Director of Institutional Advancement, the Deputy Director plays a key role in all fundraising activities with a particular focus on Corporate Sponsorship and oversight of the Major Gifts and Grants programs. Successful candidates will have proven experience in relationship building at all levels; cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding contributions from corporate and individual donors; motivating volunteer leaders; and enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • A minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience with increasing responsibility; arts experience preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent relationship building skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment; create and track budgets; lead meetings; and motivate volunteer leaders

  • Strong familiarity with donor database best practices and reporting, and ability to use new database systems (Salesforce, Patron Manager)


Primary Responsibilities

  • Corporate:  Deliver direct oversight of the Corporate Partnership budget line, which involves identifying and aligning institutional opportunities with corporate donors; crafting and executing strategic solicitations; ensuring the highest quality value proposition for sponsors; managing close relationships with high level sponsors; and developing and implementing effective cultivation and stewardship strategies.

  • Major Gifts:  Participate in setting, tracking, and achieving the Annual Giving budget line; oversee the Membership Coordinator responsible for membership and annual fund goals; and build strong, meaningful relationships with the organization’s Major Donors.

  • Grants:  Provide oversight of the Grants program, supervising the Institutional Giving Manager and collaborating on the identification of funding opportunities and sources, solicitation strategies, and proposal development.

  • Manage two Board of Trustees committees: Corporate Partnership and Major Gifts.

Attend special networking, cultivation, and programming related events throughout the year.
