Executive Director

New London Historical Society

The mission of the New London Historical Society is to preserve the history of the New London area by:

  • collecting and conserving artifacts;
  • offering education and programs;
  • and collaborating with other local and regional organizations.

The New London Historical Society (NLHS) has embarked on an ambitious initiative to enhance its programming by developing a multi-faceted education program for visitors, schools and the community at large. The Executive Director, a position created four years ago, was given the mandate to improve NLHS’s visibility and perceived value to the greater New London community. That effort has been quite successful, but has also revealed the need for greater substantive educational programming to raise NLHS’s offerings to the next level.

Requirements:

Educational and professional prerequisites:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Graduate degree with specialization in subjects such as museum management or historic preservation is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with a museum, cultural institution or other non-profit organization.
  • Experience with museum database management (e.g. PastPerfect) a plus
  • Strong writing and presentation skills, including experience in grant writing
  • Knowledge of museum and historical preservation best practices
  • Passion for local history
  • Motivated self-starter with a well-developed sense of humor able to work in an unstructured environment.
Responsibilities:

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, subject to the direct supervision of the Board President. The ED shall be responsible for the overall administration of the NLHS and shall have broad authority to develop mission-appropriate education programs, foster the historic preservation of the village and it’s collections, continue to develop sound working relationships with the other community groups and organizations and play a key role in fundraising and budget management. Specific responsibilities include:

Operations:

  • Provide leadership, management, planning and oversight in all aspects of the Society’s operations and carry out policies adopted by the Board. The ED shall serve ex officio on all Board and program committees.
  • Work to maintain membership levels and to seek ways to increase both memberships and membership contributions.
  • Expand and oversee the volunteer base and promote active participation by volunteers in all areas of the Society’s work.
  • Oversee the maintenance and preservation of NLHS’s facilities.
  • Together with the Board President and designated Board officers, conduct official correspondence and authorize expenditures.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field, and keep abreast of technological advancements in collections management and operations.
  • Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • This is a 32 hour per week commitment.

Finance:

  • Work with staff, Finance Committee and the board to prepare the annual budget and ensure that NLHS operates within budget guidelines.
  • In collaboration with the Development Committee, work to initiate and maintain a fundraising plan to ensure continued operations and future growth of NLHS.

Communications and Outreach:

  • See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the Society and all important factors influencing it.
  • Maintain close working relationships with town entities, the business community and other relevant organizations.
  • Publicize the activities of NLHS, its programs and its goals.

Education:

  • Create educational programs that build on the NLHS mission and content of it’s NLHS collection.
  • Catalog the collections.
  • Plan special events in connection with exhibits.
  • Design programs for outreach to schools and create materials that connect NLHS’s message to elements in the teachers’ curriculum.

Staffing:

  • Be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training and termination of all staff and volunteers.
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education.
  • Maintain an organization climate that attracts, retains and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality volunteers and employees.
