Program Description:

The New Hampshire Lawyers Assistance Program (NHLAP) provides confidential assistance to lawyers, judges, and law students with personal or professional issues compromising wellness. NHLAP delivers high-quality services for the intervention and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders impacting the legal profession, as well as the promotion of well-being as a means of prevention of these disorders.

Position Overview:

Provide one-to-one consultations, education, support, crisis intervention, assessment, support, and/or appropriate referrals pertaining to alcohol and/or substance misuse and/or other mental health and well-being concerns for lawyers, judges, law students, and law graduates. Facilitate all aspects of case management and providing supports to individuals in emotional distress.

Maintain timely, accurate, and detailed documentation of all case activity, including but not limited to correspondence with relevant outside third parties. The team clinician will also be expected to engage in other, various activities undertaken by NHLAP including, but not limited to, outreach, presentations, educational programming, authoring articles for the New Hampshire Bar News and other publications, and keeping abreast of current developments in the fields of mental health and addiction treatment. Assist in development and implementation of NHLAP volunteer peer training program. Deliver recovery monitoring services to law students, judges, bar candidates and lawyers who wish to engage in monitoring program to strengthen and support their recovery and obtain documentation of their efforts to get and stay clean and sober or compliant with their individualized monitoring program.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Conduct one-to-one consultations and work collaboratively to develop individual plans of support.
  • Deliver case management services in connecting legal professionals to vetted specialists for assessment, psychotherapy, inpatient or outpatient treatment, career counseling, executive coaching, and other personal or professional needs.
  • Plan and facilitate NHLAP’s Peer Support Group Programming
  • Promote and teach such well-being skills as practicing self-care, finding balance, and managing major life transitions.
  • Provide information on NHLAP program, issues pertaining to recovery and well- being, and other information as requested, as well as education, support, and guidance to judges, attorneys, and law students throughout the State of New Hampshire.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of volunteer peer training program.
  • Participate in other, various activities undertaken by NHLAP, such as, but not limited to, outreach, presentations, educational programming, authoring articles, and keeping abreast of current developments in the areas of addiction, mental health, and monitoring.
  • Coordinate confidential evaluations, professional treatment, counseling, after-care, and other recommended supports for participants engaged in NHLAP’s Health and Recovery Monitoring Program.
  • Develop, formulate and execute contractual agreements for monitoring, diversionary or otherwise, in response to referrals from outside sources such as employers or discipline boards.
  • Provide written reports to the N.H. Supreme Court’s Judicial Conduct Committee, Attorney Discipline Office, and the Office of Bar Admission’s Character and Fitness Committee on cases involving readmission or reinstatement of lawyers wherein a behavioral health disorder was a causative factor in their misconduct.
  • Occasional out of state travel for conferences (1-3 times per year)
  • Provide services related to the program at the Program Director’s discretion.
  • Keep accurate record of clinical activities for statistical reports.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Adhere to NHLAP policies and procedures.

Required skills, credentials, and experience:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field
  • Experience treating individuals with mental health/substance use disorder.
  • Familiarity with individual, group, and family work in formal treatment as well as in support groups
  • Presentation/public speaking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a team player, able to communicate and deal with stress as an effective member of a team.
  • Must have the ability to balance empathy with accountability.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state of New Hampshire, in private insured vehicle or other means of transportation. This position will require some travel.
  • Attend educational conferences and maintain professional credentials.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of the DSM 5

Desirable credentials, skills, and experience

  • JD or other experience with legal professionals
  • Current New Hampshire Licensure as clinical psychologist, LICSW, LCMHC, LMFT, or MLADC.
  • Certification as MH First Aid Instructor or Certified Recovery Coach
  • Significant substantive experience treating individuals with mental health/substance use disorders, including experience working with impaired professionals or individuals who are court ordered to treatment.
  • Significant experience with individual, group, and family work in formal treatment as well as in support groups.
  • Experience treating legal or medical professionals.
  • Training experience

Salary based on background, experience, credentials and demonstrated skills.
