National Council of Nonprofit Associations Appoints Tim Delaney as CEO

Washington, DC (June 12, 2007) - The board of directors of the National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) announced on June 1 the appointment of Tim Delaney as its next chief executive officer. Delaney, an attorney who currently leads the Phoenix-based nonprofit Center for Leadership, Ethics & Public Service, will join NCNA on July 7. He will succeed Audrey R. Alvarado, Ph.D., who has successfully led NCNA since 1999.

"Tim is a dynamic leader and strategic thinker with a distinguished record in multiple fields," said Doug Sauer, chair of NCNA's board of directors and CEO of The Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc. "As a private attorney, Tim represented some of America's most prominent corporations as well as Members of Congress. As a public lawyer, he won cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and prosecuted the removal of elected officials for breaching the public trust. As an adjunct faculty member at a major university, he received awards for his teaching."

"Importantly, Tim is also an accomplished nonprofit practitioner," Sauer continued. "Over the last 30 years Tim has helped nonprofits as an advocate, board member, CEO, consultant, lawyer, lobbyist, teacher, trainer, and writer. NCNA takes pride in welcoming Tim to our team, where his proven success as an energetic and innovative leader will help advance NCNA?s vision of improving lives and communities by advancing the nonprofit sector."

Delaney began his career and became a partner at a large multi-state law firm. When appointed Arizona's Solicitor General, he guided the state to win several cases in the U.S. Supreme Court. He later was promoted to the top staff position of Chief Deputy Attorney General. In 2001, Delaney left the Attorney General's Office to create the Center for Leadership, Ethics & Public Service, which champions positive ethics, advances civic engagement, and promotes democracy. As president of the Center, Delaney has traveled across the country working with more than 21,000 educators, journalists, judges, legislators, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and others.

Delaney earned his Bachelor of Arts degree (in Political Science and American Studies) from Yale University, his Master of Public Affairs degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas Law School.

"As someone who has run a small nonprofit and worked with countless nonprofits at the grassroots level across the country, I have a deep and personal appreciation for the challenges faced by America's small to midsize nonprofits," Delaney said. "I feel honored to have the opportunity to lead an organization that serves as a champion for nonprofits by serving, uniting, and otherwise strengthening the nonprofit community."

The National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) is the network of state and regional nonprofit associations serving over 20,000 members in 41 states and the District of Columbia. NCNA links local organizations to a national audience through state associations and helps small and midsize nonprofits: manage and lead more effectively; collaborate and exchange solutions; engage in critical policy issues affecting the sector; and achieve greater impact in their communities.
