Communications Manager

Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire

SELT is a nonprofit land conservation organization serving 52 communities in southeastern New Hampshire. This is a temporary position that will be full-time for 3.5 months and then part time for another 2 months. The duration of the position will be from mid-January 2018 to July 1, 2018.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager is responsible for sustaining donor awareness and increasing public awareness and support for SELT’s work and mission via a wide array of responsibilities, including the writing, creation, production, and design of a diverse range of publications and platforms (for both traditional and digital media) as well as public relations and media outreach.  While communications is the primary area of responsibility, the Communications Manager also supports the organization’s fundraising activities through direct mail project management/material development and some event coordination and sponsorship management. 


Essential Qualifications:

  • Ability & willingness to travel across SELT’s 52 town service area as needed
  • Ability & willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and weeknight hours
  • Work is performed in a typical office setting but may require willingness to work long hours as required.  This is an exempt (salaried) position; time and hours needed to complete assigned duties will flex up and down depending on workload
  • Ability to deliver high quality materials & project as per agreed upon deadlines & specifications
  • Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain


Position-Specific Qualifications:

  • Strong design and production skills, thorough knowledge of the printing process and all aspects of publications production
  • Superior editing, proofreading, oral, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong working knowledge of WordPress, Email Campaign systems (such as Constant Contact), Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram
  • Ability to work well in a team-driven environment, as well as on independent assignments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail a must
  • Ability to organize time & manage diverse activities to successfully meet concurrent deadlines
  • Creative with ability to conceptualize design
  • Duties may require non-routine analysis, research and follow-through
  • Communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey SELT’s mission to diverse groups including donors, Board members, the public, and others
  • Ability to solicit support through clearly written communications
  • Ability to leverage constructive and effective relationships inside and outside of SELT
  • Ability to successfully manage outside vendors and contracts


  • Collaborates across the organization and with the DEVO team to develop and sustain vibrant, interactive, and branded messaging and content across multiple platforms, including website, social media, email, publications, merchandise, and other communications for supporters including donors, potential supporters and partners
  • Develops annual communications plan and timelines for various platforms in addition to communication specific projects. Manages platforms and projects to ensure timelines, budgets, and quality expectations are met
  • Manages the planning, development, and distribution of all communication collateral in ways that are consistent with SELT’s Strategic Plan
  • Compiles, writes, and edits all content for newsletters, annual reports, e-news, social media, website, event invitations, trail guides, property signs and kiosks, press releases, and video
  • Produces program-specific materials for other departments as needed
  • Evaluates communication vehicles and adjusts as necessary to improve public awareness and constituent engagement; develops metrics and analytics to direct communication efforts and measure success
  • Ensures that internal stakeholders are apprised of project timelines, deadlines, and asset requirements
  • Participates in regular trainings to stay informed of industry best practices; maintains knowledge for best practices and emerging technologies


  • Develops plan for and, manages production of, annual direct response fundraising materials, including letters, response devices, and other pieces critical to fundraising packages
  • Develops online content, portals, and donation pages to drive help drive fundraising efforts
  • Assists in the development of corporate sponsorship opportunities for major events; actively solicits corporate sponsors
  • Collaborates with DEVO team and event committee members to plan and execute successful major events that reach fundraising and/or outreach goals
