A community-funded, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, Cocheco Valley Humane Society (CVHS) is dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of animals in Strafford County, NH and Southern Maine. We are a safe, temporary home for more than 1,500 surrendered, lost, abused, neglected, or unwanted animals each year.

Our mission is to provide quality, compassionate care and shelter to our animals, in partnership with educating the community concerning humane animal treatment and welfare.

This position is responsible for assisting with overall care, health, and well-being of the animals at the shelter.

The Animal Care Technician will:

  • Treat all animals with compassion and kindness.
  • Treat the public, CVHS volunteers, and staff in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Strive for high levels of client service and animal care.
  • Uphold the organization’s mission and policies in all facets of daily operation.
  • Make every effort to help Adoption Counselors place animals in appropriate and safe homes by noting specific behaviors and other information that is helpful.
  • Set an example of knowledge, professionalism, trust, and teamwork.
Requirements:

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma and a minimum of three (3) months of experience caring for companion animals in a veterinary practice, animal shelter, grooming salon, training facility, or other related business.
  • Must be able to work with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, multitask, and think critically.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
Responsibilities:

Responsibilities for the Animal Care Technician include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Care for animals including cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, birds, rabbits, and other small animals.
  • Assist Shelter Manager in all duties relating to animal health, including but not limited to: care, kennel and cage cleaning, feeding, socializing, exercise, and restraining animals. Maintaining a clean and healthy environment for every animal is a top priority.
  • Maintain clear and constant communication with Shelter Manager and Medical Manager regarding animals or any concerns.
  • Provide enrichment for all animals.
  • Assist with daily laundry – wash, dry, fold, and put away in proper storage all clean laundry.
  • Maintain a clean and clutter-free environment, tasks include but are not limited to: take out the trash, keep trash receptacles clean and free of excrement and food, wipe down and sanitize all surfaces, keep counters and floors clean, and wash dishes.
  • Ensure that all animals have accurate cage cards.
  • Maintain inventory of food supplies; litter, newspapers; daily health sheets; adoption kits; promotional and educational literature; laundry detergent; cleaning and disinfecting solutions; paper towels; and other items used in the daily care of animals.
  • Maintain professional and appropriate conduct and attire at all times.
  • Maintain safety standards at all times as directed by the CVHS Safety Manual.
  • Comply with and enforce all established CVHS policies/procedures.
  • Promote positive community relations
  • Represent CVHS in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Provide quality, thoughtful, and kind service to customers, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions.
