Community & Employment Specialist

Southwestern Community Services

A community action agency serving Cheshire and Sullivan Counties since 1965

The Community and Employment Specialist provides individualized services and supports to people who have a developmental disability; works with assigned individuals to assist the person in achieving goals and objectives as agreed upon in the Individual Service Plan; provides a structured learning environment and teaches skills in the areas of daily living (including personal care), communication, community, safety, and employment skills to increase independence; serves as “primary staff” for assigned consumers, which includes completion of all documentation required for program certification (in a timely and accurate manner) and participation in team meetings; monitors the health and well-being of consumers served by the program and communicates both verbally and in writing with appropriate parties; represents our consumers, the program and Southwestern Community Services in a positive manner in all interactions.


- High School diploma or equivalent
- Clean background check and acceptable driving record with a current valid driver’s license
- Two years of paid employment experience
- Ability to work in a variety of challenging environments and conditions, including heavy exertion
- Skills and abilities in developing, meeting, and presenting consumers' needs and interests in important matters
- Readily accepts own role in the outcome of a situation whether positive or negative
- Ability to assess, assist, and motivate others to attain and improve skills, knowledge, and ability.
- Ability to clearly convey messages, ideas, and expectations through effective use of words (oral and written), body language, tone, and gestures.
- Respects the confidentiality of consumers and coworkers
- Understands and respects Clients Rights and Behavioral/Gentle Teaching Guidelines 

  • Assist consumers in the development of and participation in meaningful community activities, both vocational and recreational
  • Facilitate and promote opportunities and environments for consumers’ personal growth and relationship building
  • Ensure implementation and documentation of the “individual service plan”, as required and directed
  • Serve as a role model for consumers and community members in terms of attitude, interactions, work performance, and personal care
  • Represent self, consumers, program, and agency in a positive manner with community employers, volunteer site supervisors, area agency representatives, guardians, other team members, and any other members of the community
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment at all times, including assistance with personal care in compliance with agency safety policies
  • Learn, understand, and observe clients' rights, behavior management guidelines, and the SCS Employee Manual
  • Respect the confidentiality of all consumers and staff
  • Attend training for professional growth and development as required or assigned by supervisor
  • Perform other duties on an as-needed or emergency basis, as requested or assigned by supervisor
