Head Start Assistant Teacher

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.


Under the direction of the Head Start Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will implement the Creative Curriculum, the Project Approach, and other appropriate content with emphasis on development of the whole child, to include partnership with parents and working with the entire family.  Provide and maintain a safe environment.   Assume responsibility for continuing planned classroom activities in the absence of the Teacher. 

Requirements:

· Must have either a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA); OR be enrolled in a program leading to an Associate or Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood.

· Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) highly preferred.  

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office

· Experience working with preschool age children.  Previous Head Start experience preferred.

Responsibilities:

· Participate in pre-service training and ongoing professional development opportunities.

· Become familiar with and work with the Teacher in providing a comprehensive program including implementation of Creative Curriculum, Project Approach and other appropriate content in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards.

·  Work as a team member to:

o Assist with the planning of daily and weekly lesson plans.

o Participate in the daily activities planned for the children.

o Assist in individual planning for each child, as well as the class as a whole.

o Assist in the daily classroom routine (i.e. helping children brush their teeth, go to the bathroom, eat lunch, and clean the classroom).

o Assist children in their use of materials in a variety of ways.

o Participate in the daily review of classroom activities and children’s behavior.

o Discuss and become familiar with your center’s policies and Head Start policies.

o Consult with the Teacher when a problem arises.

· Greet parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a smooth transition into the classroom, a positive home-classroom connection and family partnership.  Maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents and guardians.  Provide activities parents can do at home with their children to support the curriculum and the child’s learning.  Encourage parents to become involved in the classroom and other Head Start activities.  

· Eat with and assist children in development of social and self-help skills, and sound nutritional practices.

· Help organize and encourage parent involvement to include:  planning and participating in monthly classroom Parent Meetings; orienting and training of parent volunteers, and attendance at Policy Council meetings.

· Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing; ECE education, training programs, workshops/conferences as budget allows, reading articles and professional journals pertaining to ECE and Head Start.

· Participate in various meetings to include weekly center staffing, program meetings and collaborative meetings with other agencies as assigned.

· Assume the Teacher’s responsibilities when the Teacher is absent, if accreditation allows.

· Report any concerns for safety, health, or non-compliance to the Teacher, Education Manager and/or Child & Family Services Director.

· Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisors that are reasonably within the scope of duties listed above.
