General Assignment/Demographics Reporter

NH Public Radio

NHPR is New Hampshire’s independent and trusted source for news and information, and the state’s largest radio news service with 177,000 weekly listeners.  Based in Concord, the state’s capital and political hub, our newsroom, digital team and original programs consistently earn national recognition for their in-depth reporting and production. NHPR is the winner of the 2015 and 2017 National Edward R. Murrow Award for overall excellence.

NHPR is seeking a creative, adventurous and thoughtful reporter to join our newsroom as a General Assignment reporter with a focus on New Hampshire’s changing demographics. In this position you’ll do a fair share of general assignment reporting, but we’re also looking for someone with a passion for telling stories that explore the social, cultural and demographic evolution of the state.

This is a new position for our newsroom, and one we’re really excited about. Your beat will cover a wide range of topics: immigration, race, religion, youth culture, aging, economic opportunity, and more. In short, you’ll be on the hunt for any story that captures what New Hampshire’s cultural life looks and feels like now, and how it’s changing. We’re looking for a reporter eager to get out of the newsroom and into communities – inside schools, businesses, homes, neighborhoods and cultural spaces – to capture the voices and stories of New Hampshire residents.

While you will file regular radio stories, you’ll also be innovative in the use of digital media, including video, social media, blogs and podcasting.  You will find creative ways to engage with different kinds of communities in person, with the goal of bringing more diverse voices and viewpoints into our news coverage. The right candidate could come from any background in journalism: a producer looking to get into reporting, a freelancer eager to join a growing newsroom; a print reporter seeking broadcast news experience. This position reports to the News Director.

Requirements:

• A minimum of three years of reporting experience and demonstrated initiative in developing sources to produce original news coverage
• Demonstrated news judgment and experience covering social/cultural trends
• Broadcast journalism experience preferred
• Ability to analyze data and experience using data to tell stories
• Working knowledge of New Hampshire news and trends desirable
• Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required and advanced multi-media skills, including experience in producing or editing digital media is desirable (e.g., video, computer assisted reporting, interactive media)
• Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Valid driver’s license and transportation required
• B.A. in a related field or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain deep knowledge of New Hampshire news, trends and events
  • Develop in-depth reports on complex issues, policies and trends
  • Provide general assignment and breaking news coverage as required
  • Produce occasional multipart in-depth series and participate in the development and production of special programming and editorial initiatives
  • Periodically appear as a guest on programs including The Exchange, All Things Considered and Morning Edition
  • Report on radio and digital platforms using a variety of tools including blogs, infographics and video
  • Utilize social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter and others to disseminate news to the NHPR audience
  • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities as required
  • Engage diverse target audiences by connecting digitally on topics of interest via blogs, Twitter and other outlets
  • Other duties as assigned.
