ABOUT HISTORIC DEERFIELD

Historic Deerfield is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Connecticut River Valley in Western New England and telling the stories of those who have lived in Deerfield, MA. Its unique location, facilities, collections and programs provide today's audiences with an authentic experience in one of New England's most historic villages, as well as an appreciation of the conflicts and inter-cultural experiences that formed so much of our country’s early history.

The Flynt Center of Early New England Life (a modern exhibition building) and the Museum's 12 historic houses (dating from 1730 to 1872) contain one of America's top six collections of American decorative arts (furniture, silver, textiles, glass, ceramics, paintings, books and maps). In addition, the Museum offers over 75 visitor programs each year, including hands-on demonstrations and workshops that show visitors how people really lived and worked more than 200 years ago.  Other programs are designed for educators, students and researchers interested in learning more about our nation’s cultural history.

Historic Deerfield attracts a national audience, and is poised to launch a major campaign based on a successful feasibility study just completed. The museum has long enjoyed the patronage of high-net-worth individuals, many of whom view Historic Deerfield as a national treasure. Now, with the retirement of its long-term development director, Historic Deerfield’s board and leadership look forward to building on this important legacy by investing in an expanded development office and launching a critical campaign.

 


Historic Deerfield, a nationally-renowned cultural history museum located in Deerfield, MA, is seeking a highly-professional major gift officer to help take its Development program to the next level and to assist with a $10 million comprehensive campaign.

Campaign Major Gifts Officer

  • Responsible for soliciting major and planned gifts of at least $10,000 from museum supporters and prospects.
  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of 100-125 prospective and current donors, utilizing Raiser’s Edge and other tools as appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with and in support of the Director of Development, President, development staff, campaign volunteers, and other museum representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for a comprehensive campaign and museum-wide priorities.
  • Ensures achievement of realistic moves management goals, including metrics such as visits, asks, gift closures and upgrading.
  • Must be a highly motivated professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the five and six-figure range.
  • Reports to the Director of Development and works collaboratively and strategically with campaign counsel, other fundraising professionals, trustees, and campaign leaders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of high-level donors and prospects, including all stages of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Travel regionally and nationally as appropriate to manage portfolio, but no less than at least 30-50% of time.
  • Adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate a good sense of humor, an empathetic disposition, and excellent perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and demonstrate sensitivity to needs of the donors.
  • Work collaboratively with the development team and other museum colleagues.
  • Focus on securing support for a set of museum-wide priorities, including established campaign goals for historic preservation and visitor programming, unrestricted support for museum operations, facility renovation and restoration, endowed chairs, scholarships, and overall museum improvements.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five to seven years successful experience in major or planned gift fundraising.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of  major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the museum.
  • A dedication to promoting the museum’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with staff, trustees, campaign leaders, volunteers, and the development office team.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully juggle multiple assignments at once.
  • Successful experience in building a prospect base, making cold calls and developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of achieving goals.
  • Must be willing to travel regionally and nationally at least 30-50% of the time.
