What is a Life Skills Coach (a.k.a. Direct Support Professional)?

A Life Skills Coach is a coach, mentor and teacher. They help individuals with intellectual disabilities develop the skills needed to integrate into the community and pursue opportunities for employment, improving their overall quality of life.

What does a Life Skills Coach do?

A Life Skills Coach helps individuals develop social, vocational and personal care skills by providing the support needed for them to engage in daily training, recreational activities and social activities such as: Shopping / Attending Movies / Job Shadowing / Swimming / Bowling / Skiing / Golf / Cooking / Arts & Crafts / Recreational Opportunities

We’re looking for applicants who want to learn and grow, while helping others do the same. All you need to bring is a positive attitude and a desire to make a difference!

In the professional community this type of position is known as a DSP (Direct Support Professional), which is a nationally recognized profession with opportunities for advancement. Our comprehensive PAID training program is designed to help you advance and includes:

  • Access to the full online disability training library available through Relias Learning
  • Certification training in CPR/First Aid, Defensive Driving, Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
  • Training on personal care services
  • On-going professional development in topics such as: critical thinking, email etiquette, social media guidelines
  • A minimum of 30 hours with a professional mentor


**Benefits for full-time (30+ hours/week) employees – eligible on the first of the month following 2 months of employment (health, dental, short & long term disability, life insurance)  On date-of-hire you are eligible for a 403b retirement plan (tax deferred savings plan - 4% agency match after 1 year of employment) and paid time off  (vacation, sick and personal time ) Also 10 holidays / year.

**Part-time (20-29 hours/week) employees - eligible for paid holidays, PTO and 403b retiement plan

All you need to bring is a positive attitude and a desire to make a difference! *This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license, personal vehicle and automobile insurance.


Our Life SKills Coaches (depending ont he program) will be expected to: Drive individuals to and from recreational site using Moore Center vehicles or by personal vehicle. If personal vehicle is used - Moore Center will provide mileage reinbursement. Life Skill Coaches will also need to provide some level of personal care
