Children’s Community Support Counselor

Summary Statement:

The Children’s Community Support Counselor provides community-based counseling services to children and families. This position works collaboratively with the clinical team to support the child in working toward and completing their therapeutic and recovery goals outlined in the treatment plan.   This is a full time, 35 hour a week position.                      

This specific position works within children ages 3-21 creating individualized plans that are tailored to meet each child’s needs, interests and goals and work with them side by side to successfully achieve their transitional aged goals.  The Community Support Counselor will assist struggling youth become successful by supporting and teaching values and skills necessary to function independently and achieve their personal goals. Counseling interventions will be based in the community setting such as home, school and other social environments. 

Requirements:

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability to be self-directed, motivated and an independent problem solver;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with clients and their families;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cohesively with other professionals across disciplines, inside and outside of the agency;
  • Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment in routine, urgent and emergent clinical situations;
  • Ability to read, understand, apply practice standards, technical procedures, government standards and regulations;
  • Ability to acquire and effectively practice new clinical skills as needed according to evolving agency needs/services;
  • Ability to document effectively and efficiently in course of clinical work, and to navigate an electronic health record. 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an Associate’s degree with a minimum of two years of direct experience within a related field is required.

 Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

The majority of the work takes place in the community.  The ability to actively engage with children and conduct interactive play within a therapeutic setting is required.  Manual dexterity is needed to use computers and standard office equipment. The ability to sit for extended periods of time is required.  Reliable transportation, driver’s license with a clean driving record and proof of auto insurance is required, as home visits to clients are expected.

Responsibilities:

Major Functional Areas and Description of Duties:

  • Working with children and their families to provide direct support within the community;
  • Document and articulate treatment interventions effectively;
  • Communicate symptoms, behaviors, strategies and interventions to the clinical team;
  • Maintain professional codes of conduct and ethics;
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by supervisor.
